Our Philosophy

Not for the visa — to study calligraphy seriously.

Calligraphia Japan is not a school intended solely for obtaining a Cultural Activities visa. What matters to us is that you use your time in Japan to thoroughly learn the fundamentals of calligraphy — and develop the skills to keep practicing for many years to come. The visa is simply one means of making that possible.

It's not "studying calligraphy in order to live in Japan." It's using a Cultural Activities visa in order to study calligraphy seriously in Japan.

Why Calligraphia Japan

Five Reasons Students Choose Us

01

More than 10 years teaching international students

Since 2011 we have taught students of many nationalities, cultures, and skill levels — and supported their Cultural Activities visa applications. Our educational environment is the result of over a decade of accumulated experience, not a recent offering.

02

Serious calligraphy education — not simply visa sponsorship

At the heart of everything we do is education: brush posture, pressure, rhythm, character balance, and the ability to write with intention. A strong foundation is what lets students progress to classical works, different styles, and original artwork.

03

An international classroom, connected by calligraphy

Students from 40+ countries study together in the same classroom. What they share is the desire to learn calligraphy seriously — and by learning alongside people from around the world, each deepens their understanding of Japanese culture.

04

One of Japan's largest schools of its kind

We are one of Japan's largest schools providing serious calligraphy education specifically for international students. What matters isn't size itself — it's the proven record of consistently educating and supporting a large number of students.

05

A curriculum by internationally active calligrapher Taiga Uehira

Our founder, Taiga Uehira, exhibits and performs in Japan and overseas. His fundamentals-focused curriculum teaches students not to simply copy examples, but to understand why each stroke takes its form — a foundation for a lifetime of practice.

A Visa Is Not the Goal

The goal is to build a strong foundation in calligraphy, deepen your understanding of Japanese culture, and continue practicing long after you leave Japan. We want Calligraphia Japan to be chosen not by people simply looking for a visa sponsor — but by those who genuinely want to study calligraphy in Japan.

We want your time here to become more than an experience of living abroad — an encounter with a skill and culture you carry for the rest of your life.
