Japan's Cultural Activities Visa (文化活動ビザ) is a long-stay residence status for foreigners who want to study a traditional Japanese art or cultural discipline. Unlike a tourist visa (90 days max) or a working holiday visa (1 year, work-allowed), this visa can last up to 3 years and is specifically for cultural study.
For Australians, this is an incredibly attractive option — especially if you've already used your Working Holiday Visa, are over 30, or simply want a longer, more immersive stay in Japan without relying on employment.

From your first application to landing in Osaka, here's the general journey (we'll walk you through every detail once you apply):

If you're already in Japan on a tourist visa, you're welcome to visit our Osaka classroom in person. Otherwise, the intro lesson can be done via Zoom from anywhere in the world.

Japanese Immigration issues a Certificate of Eligibility (CoE). This typically takes 1–3 months. We keep you updated throughout.
Once approved, you fly to Osaka and begin your calligraphy studies. The visa lasts 6 months or 1 year and can be extended up to 3 years.

Living Costs in Osaka
As a rough guide, most students budget A$1,500–A$2,500/month for rent, food, transport, and daily living in Osaka. This varies depending on your lifestyle, but Osaka is significantly cheaper than Sydney or Melbourne.
Important: This Visa Does Not Allow Work
The Cultural Activities Visa requires you to be in Japan solely for cultural study. Any employment — part-time, casual, or otherwise — violates the terms of the visa and can result in revocation and future entry bans. You must be able to fund your own stay.
